Here are answers to the questions we hear most often about TEFA.
Application & Deadlines
When is the application deadline?
March 17, 2026, 11:59 p.m. Central.
Do I reapply every year?
No. Once accepted, you confirm continuation each year. You don't submit a full new application.
Is it first-come, first-served?
No. You can apply anytime during the window. If funding is limited, a lottery within priority tiers determines placement.
Income & Eligibility
Is there an income limit?
No. All eligible Texas families can apply.
Who qualifies?
Texas residents with children who are U.S. citizens or lawfully present and eligible for Texas public school. Full eligibility
Homeschool & Private School
How much do homeschool families get?
$2,000 per eligible child per year.
Can I pay myself to homeschool?
No. TEFA funds cannot be used to pay a family member.
How much for private school?
$10,474 per child for 2026-27. Up to $30,000 if your child has an IEP on file.
Special Needs
Does a 504 plan qualify for $30K?
No. Only an IEP on file with TEA qualifies for the higher amount.
What if my child has an IEP?
You may receive up to $30,000 based on district funding for services under the IEP.
