TEFA Private School Checklist — How to Choose the Right Fit for Your Family
TEFA Private School Checklist — How to Choose the Right Fit for Your Family
TEFA gives you up to $10,474 (or $30K for special needs) for private school. Here's how to narrow your options and find the right fit.
1. Confirm TEFA Participation
Ask: Are you participating in TEFA for 2026-27?
Not all private schools participate. Use the official finder to see who does.
2. Compare Tuition to Your TEFA Amount
- $10,474 covers full tuition at many schools; some charge more.
- $30,000 (special needs) covers higher-cost programs.
- Ask about financial aid if tuition exceeds your TEFA amount.
3. Curriculum & Philosophy
- Traditional, classical, Montessori, religious, or other?
- Does it align with your family's values and your child's learning style?
4. Location & Schedule
- Commute time and before/after care
- School calendar and hours
5. Special Needs Support (If Applicable)
- Does the school serve students with IEPs?
- What therapies or accommodations are available?
- Is there a dedicated special education coordinator?
6. Visit & Ask Questions
Schedule a tour. Ask about class size, teacher qualifications, and how TEFA funds are applied (tuition credit, reimbursement, etc.).
