TEFA Special Needs Funding — Up to $30,000 for Students With an IEP

If your child has an Individualized Education Program (IEP), they may qualify for up to $30,000 per year through TEFA—compared to $10,474 for private school students without an IEP. Here's what you need to know.

IEP vs. 504 for TEFA

Only an IEP qualifies for the $30,000 tier. A 504 plan does not. The IEP must be on file with the Texas Education Agency (TEA) by the end of the application period (March 17, 2026).

  • IEP: Qualifies for up to $30,000
  • 504 only: Receives $10,474 if attending private school

If you're unsure which your child has, check with your school or district. IEPs are for students who need special education services; 504 plans are for accommodations.

How to Qualify for the $30K Tier

  1. Your child must have an IEP on file with TEA.
  2. You must apply during the TEFA window (through March 17, 2026).
  3. The IEP must be current and valid.

What the $30,000 Covers

The amount is based on district funding for services under your child's IEP. It can cover tuition at participating private schools that offer appropriate services, plus tutoring, therapies, and other approved expenses.
