What Is TEFA? Texas Education Freedom Accounts Explained for 2026-27

If you're a Texas parent researching education options, you've probably heard "TEFA" or "Texas Education Freedom Accounts." Here's what it means and how it could help your family.

TEFA in Plain English

TEFA is a state-funded education savings account program. If you qualify, the state deposits money into an account you can use for approved education expenses—private school tuition, tutoring, homeschool materials, and more. It's not a voucher you hand to a school; it's an account you manage through Odyssey, the program administrator.

Key numbers for 2026-27:

  • Private school: $10,474 per child
  • Special needs (IEP on file): Up to $30,000 per child
  • Homeschool: $2,000 per child

The program launches for the 2026-27 school year. Applications opened February 4, 2026, and close March 17, 2026.

Who Runs TEFA?

The Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts oversees the program. Odyssey is the certified educational assistance organization (CEAO) that handles applications and accounts. Apply through Odyssey.

Is TEFA First-Come, First-Served?

No. You can apply anytime during the window. If more families apply than funding allows, a lottery within priority tiers determines who receives funds. Lower-income households are prioritized first when funding is limited.

What Can You Use TEFA Funds For?

Approved expenses include:

  • Tuition at participating private schools
  • Textbooks and curriculum
  • Tutoring and educational therapies
  • Computer hardware and software (up to 10% of annual amount)
  • Transportation to approved providers

Funds cannot be used to pay a family member. See our TEFA Overview for the full list.
